A member asks:

What is your view of 21st century methods of bearing children e.g. artificial insemination, using an anonymous sperm donor as the father of a child, surrogate parenting, etc.? Is it a SIN for a single mother to conceive a child by artificial insemination? Are there Bible references that imply whether or not these things are wrong?

Female - Age Range: 41-50
Single parent through artificial insemination by willful choice?! Hmmm... My opinion begins with another question. How does the lifestyle replicate an image of Christ and the Church? My first 'religious' instinct is to bluntly say no; but, for the Christian lady considering such a decision, I'm certain she needs facts. It's absolutely admirable, in my opinion, for women forced by life circumstances to be a good Christian single parent. It's difficult for me to understand how I as a single could choose to become pregnant medically and reconcile it with Scriptural principles. My second thought is that such ladies are allowing fear to replace faith in their minds and hearts motivating them to rush ahead of God's timing for their mate. I'm reminded of Sarah/Abraham, Elizabeth/Zachariah who miraculously became parents long past the natural childbearing years.
'Heaven and earth shall pass away, but, My (Jesus) words shall never pass away.' I make efforts daily to allow faith to overcome fears.
Personally, as a pro-life Christian, I'm extremely wary of artificial insemination because 'embryos' are ordinarily destroyed during the routine process. In other words, there are humans destroyed in order to create humans. I would never choose to 'destroy' any of my infants, period.
Leon Katz,M.D., Ph.D. (Bush administration appointee) made a pointed remark in reference to a newly created embryo, 'she was beautiful from the moment of creation' and was, without doubt, alluding to the unique individual human spirit.
Some pro-abortion Christians have told me that they think that the spirit enters a baby's body after birth when they breathe the first time; I'm assuming that's an allusion to the translation of the word, spirit, in the New Testament. EVERY mother who has carried a child(ren) and given birth will argue with that opinion.
If you think that pro-abortion proponents do not claim to be Christian, I refer you to First Lady Laura Bush, an outspoken pro-abortion advocate, a graduate of a Christian College, and attends a Methodist Church weekly.
If a married Christian couple is considering artificial insemination, they definitely require a pro-life doctor who will value the life of each individual child in their embryonic stage of development. Destroying a human in a lab dish is no less heinous than abortion.

You may use my alias.
I work in the field of OBGYN, although not directly involved in using Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) so I have had to ask myself what my attitudes to these things are.

If a married couple is infertile I have no problems with the use of any of the usual methods of assistance - ovulation induction, artificial insemination of the husband's sperm, IVF. Using a sperm donor - especially if anonymous - is also a technology with which I agree, although I recognise the potential problems and that some people may see it differently.

I am not comfortable with assisting unmarried couples or single individuals in this way, but ultimately it is their choice. As I am not involved in the procedures, I can make this statement.

I do not believe the Bible says anything specifically on this subject - unless we count the text that says children are a blessing from the Lord - and then extrapolate that so it is legitimate to use whatever it takes to achieve the goal.

Childlessness can be a very hard burden for some couples. I do not see it as my position to tell them what is right or wrong when there is no clear scriptural guidance.

Female - Age Range: 61-70
I had trouble carrying children, thus I never had any of my own and I wish that I had had someone to conceive for me or maybe the artificial insemination. sometimes there is no choice if you really want children. I was lucky I guess because when I married my last husband he already was the father of 6 mostly grown children and one grandchild. I was then blessed to have several grands and then great-grands. Children are such a blessing and I haven't read anything about not having children via/pro-creation in the bible.

Male - Age Range: 31-40
This questions are extremely insulting!!!!!!!!
We aren't machines. Fornication is SIN even being artificial. If you really are questioning these things you need to go to a respectful christian church.

Male - Age Range: 41-50
The decision to have children is not an easy choice. In some cases it is not a choice at all. For some it is. If you are married and thinking of having a child by your spouse then do what ever it takes that is agreeable to the two of you.
